Economic developers need tools; back pocket tools that aid in making their work easier. And easier means having the necessary resources readily available for when tough decisions arise. Decisions like:

  • How do we position our community digitally so that we generate utmost awareness?
  • What are other economic development organizations doing that we can emulate and make work for our community?
  • Through what social channels can we reach our desired audiences, and how do we most effectively promote ourselves on each of these platforms?
  • In economic development, where are the decision makers looking for information? And what types of information do they want to consume?
  • What are the methodologies driving the profession? Are there new strategies and techniques EDOs are deploying that we too can utilize for maximum exposure and impact?

How Would You Rate Your Econ Dev Marketing in 2016?

If you had to grade your marketing efforts this year, what would you give yourself? Did your economic development organization blow it out of the water, or were your marketing efforts somewhat lackluster due to decreased budget or resources? Whatever your situation, it's important to reflect on what you did well, and what should be improved upon for next year. And while we realize that 2016 isn't over, starting this process before the end of the year will allow you to jump start your 2017 efforts as soon as January 1.

All economic development organizations can find value in metrics that drive outcomes - we believe this to be true, especially given our work in more than 190 communities around the world. Metrics are only going to grow in importance as investors continue to ask: “What have you done for me lately?” And, as public funding continues to decrease, private funders will move to fill the gap, but will need impact metrics to commit to their investment long term.
